What is a daily standup?

Last updated: February 2025

In the context of agile methodology, daily standup meetings are short team gatherings. Attendees assemble for about 15 minutes to discuss progress, plans, and blockers. They are quick and actionable — giving everyone the chance to share progress updates and keep individual work connected to overall team efforts.

Daily standups usually happen at the same time each working day. Folks take turns sharing what they worked on yesterday, what they plan to work on today, and any challenges. While daily standups have become popular with teams outside of engineering and development, we will focus on standups as scrum events in this guide.

Think of daily standups like a team huddle during a sporting event. They provide the opportunity for a quick exchange of vital information — so teams can share approaches and coordinate next steps.

Daily standups are one of the standard scrum events (also called ceremonies), along with sprint planning, sprint review, and sprint retrospectives. They help teams stay agile — quickly adapting to changing circumstances and new information so work can progress efficiently. Standups also reinforce the self-organizing nature of scrum teams. When you are responsible as a team for managing how and when work gets done, it is vital to stay in close contact.
